Repo Men

In the world of this sci-fi thriller set in the not-too-distant future, artificial organs are readily available to anybody with a credit card. But what happens if a buyer falls delinquent on his payments? Jude Law stars as an organ repo man who’s now fleeing his ex-partner after failing to keep up the payments on his own recently installed ticker. Miguel Sapochnik (Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary) directs; Forest Whitaker (The Last Kind of Scotland) and Liev Schreiber (Defiance) co-star.

If it weren’t for a somewhat clever ending, this movie would have been a 2 out of 10.

I am no fan of Sapochnik as a director. I never liked “Trainspotting,” and never understood the hype. I get dark film, but bleak is a whole different outlook. And that’s the take in “Repo Men.” Law and Whitaker play former Marines who get jobs after the war in which they take artificial organs out of the bodies of people who are late on their payments. It’s a whole scam. They’re over-priced, people have to finance them on loans they can’t afford, and the company takes them back and resells them making profit hand over fist. There’s also a family plot tied in where Law is torn between his demanding job and family.

But most of the film is violence — either people getting hacked up or fighting. I was left with little reason to care about Law’s character and found myself hoping he’d just die or whatever. There are twists that tried to be clever, but weren’t. Like Law’s character has a bad accident at work and needs an implant and then goes on the run while he is tracked down by repo men after no being able to make the payments. It’s really all too silly. The ending, if you’re willing to trudge through a lot of crap to get to, is pretty good.
